For four years Herring drove the coach, "York and London Highflyer", and painting in his leisure, gained a reputation as the "coachman-painter".
Herring eventually devoted himself entirely to painting, receiving the only art instruction of his career from Abraham Cooper. For thirty-three successive years Herring painted the winners of the races at St. Leger.
