Presumably commissioned by the sitter (or possibly by the 3rd Duke of Grafton on behalf of the sitter); reputedly later in the Selby-Lowndes collection, purchased c. 1938 by a Belgian private collector, by whom sold as 'The Propery of a Nobleman', Sotheby's 9 July 1980
