The grey mare depicted in this painting was a favourite hunter of Edward, Lord Herbert, later 2nd Earl of Powis (1785-1848). He was the eldest son of the nabob Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis (1754-1839), Governor of Madras and himself son of the legendary Clive of India. The 1st Earl inherited large estates in Shropshire and the Welsh border counties and consolidated his position by marrying Lady Henrietta Herbert (1758-1830), daughter of the 1st Earl of Powis (1748 creation). When Lady Henrietta’s brother George, the 2nd Earl of Powis, died unmarried in 1801, the vast Herbert estates in Shropshire and Montgomeryshire, centred on Powis Castle, passed to Edward Clive the younger, who took the name of Herbert in 1807.
