The Marquess of Hastings

Lecturer was a bay colt foaled in 1863 by Colsterdale out of Algebra. He ran for Mr Alfred Day as a two-year-old and was unplaced on both occasions. The following season he was sold to the Marquess of Hastings and displayed improved form, winning the New Plate, the Free Handicap and the Cesarewitch at Newmarket and the County Members’ Plate at Bath.

In 1867, the year that Harry Hall made this painting, Lecturer developed into a top-class Cup horse. His five wins comprised a Queen’s Plate at Northampton, the Gold Cup and the Alexandra Plate at Royal Ascot, the Hurstbourne Cup at Stockbridge and the Stamford Cup
