However, Rembrandt presents the man in a posture, that no longer corresponds simply to the pose for a portrait, as was the case with Nicolaes Ruts; although his eyes are turned towards the observer, the manner in which he is sharpening his quill suggests that he has merely briefly interrupted his writing and, sunk in thought, is momentarily looking to the front.
