In 1860 Unterberger went to live in Brussels, where he followed the Belgian school, and whence he visited southern France and Italy, especially Naples and its environs where Unterberger painted some of his best oil paintings like Canale della Giudecca and The Bay of Naples. Unterberger also visited Norway and England.
