      Jules-Joseph Lefebvre was a celebrated French artist and one of the primary teachers of American expatriate painters in the second half of the 19th century. Known for his often allegorical portrayals of the female nude - Pandora, 1882, Truth, 1870, the popularity of his paintings rivaled that of Bourguereau. (Interestingly, Lefebvre was the teacher of Bouguereau's second wife, Elizabeth.)
