The popularity of archaeologically accurate paintings was spurred on by the direct involvement of France in excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum. by that time it was possible to be archaeologically accurate, even with domestic genre paintings . Alma-Tadema was an early and enthusiastic convert to this trend, and, as much as anyone else, brought depictions of antiquity from an archaeological science into his oil paintings.
