      Destiny cannot be properly understood without considering where Waterhouse exhibited it. In 1899, Britain had blundered into the Boer War against a comparatively small force of rebels in South Africa. Appalling losses generated an outburst of patriotism among artists, and the Magazine of Art reported that Waterhouse inaugurated the Artists’ War Fund to benefit the injured and widowed: ‘within a very short time nearly every artist of considerable importance in the kingdom [had] associated himself with the scheme.’ Ultimately 339 painters and sculptors donated works. Waterhouse left it to Poynter and M. H. Spielmann – as president and honorary secretary of the initiative – to secure the patronage of Queen Victoria, whose sculptor-daughter Princess Louise opened the exhibition at the Guildhall Art Gallery in January 1900. The paintings were auctioned by Christie’s, realizing more than £12,000. Waterhouse’s painting, Destiny, was purchased by Agnew’s and sold promptly to John Haworth of Burnley, Lancashire, who bought at least two more Waterhouse paintings in 1903.
