      Not particularly liking portraiture, Gerome did however produce a series of portraits of his friends and fashionable ladies, which was supplemented by a splendid series of commisioned busts in marble and bronze, the climax of which was a splendid polychromed Sarah Bernhardt now in the Musée d'Orsay.
