      Despite the minute archaeological specificity of every detail, Alma-Tadema's architectural assemblages do not "reconstruct" the topography of ancient Rome as it was known to scholars and archaeologists. On the contrary, the compositions of Alma Tadema seem calculated to defamiliarize the Roman environment, so that the urban motif of constantly encountering the unexpected predominates over antiquarian accuracy.
