      Tissot went to England after the defeat of France by the Prussians in 1870. He met a disgraced Irishwoman called Kathleen Newton who had been sent home from India after having an affair with an army officer. She became the love of his life and his main model. His paintings of life on or near the Thames are a small but impressive part of his paintings.
