This old peasants cottage, seen at midday, gives a peaceful, idyllic picture of rural life. Van Gogh was fascinated by such peasant dwellings, which he called'human nests.' This cottage, with its double front doors and split chimney, actually housed two families. One of them was the De Groots, who posed for The Potato Eaters.
