During the 1870s, and up until his death in 1894, Inness painted landscapes that were less detailed and more personal. Rather than show every detail in a landscape, Inness used swirling, fuzzy brushstrokes. He wanted his landscape paintings to give people a certain feeling or mood. This painting Early Autumn, Montclair, also was influenced by his growing spirituality and the belief that nature and the spiritual world were connected.
