Early in his career as a painter, Inness was part of a group of painters known as the Hudson River school. The Hudson River school painters all focused on making landscape paintings that often showed either horizontal (sideways), big, open views of nature or vertical (up and down) views of, for example, the inside of a forest.
In this painting - Sunset Innesss style bagan to change. While before he had painted big, open views of nature, he started painting simple scenes of everyday outdoor life.
