Goltzius's paintings were sought after by the Emperor Rudolph II and other foreign princes, and enjoyed prestige among connoisseurs at home and across Europe, yet the overtly devotional character of paintings like the Christ in Distress and Man of Sorrows with a Chalice (nos. 105 and 108) has not been fully recognised, and may indicate a more diverse local patronage. Goltzius's paintings have, of course, long been appreciated as great works of art, but in the company of the drawings and prints they do not rise to the same level of intellectual conceit or of visual and technical complexity.
