      Unlike the French Impressionists who, obsessed with light, sought to dissolve their forms in it, this late Inness- Sundown existed in a perpetual twilight, the painting illuminated from within. "Sunset at Montclair" and "Sundown ," both from 1894, are cases in point, although neither is as strange as "Sunset" of 1893.
