He was President of the Royal Academy for almost two decades, & his presidency was a time of unrivalled prestige, & success. Edmund Blair-Leighton carried out his duties with panache, & scrupulous fairness. He was a classical painter producing highly finished paintings - God Speed!, The Accolade, Alain Chartier, Tristan and Isolde, The Charity of St. Elizabeth of Hungary & was also an excellent portraitist - Lady in a Garden, Courtship. Leighton was a sophisticated, cosmopolitan figure, much of his early life having been spent in Germany & Italy.
