It was obvious, by this time, that Alma-Tadema's oil paintings were increasing in sensitivity and tonal quality. Perhaps the influence of his recent Italian trip affected the artist's colour sensibilities or perhaps it was Alma Tadema's newly decorated studio which he had changed from deep colours to white and pale green.
